This first symposium attracted more than 200 delegates and prompted a broadening of the scope to the 1st ISTSS, held in Washington, DC, and the 2nd ISTSS in Madrid. In all cases the program has been largely by invitation only, and the work of a select few on the program committee. Response to the previous Symposia has prompted the organisers to change the focus to a traditional conference with submitted papers.
